Annual Benefit for Children’s Literacy

The students are already practicing their Readers’ Theatre performance! Come watch their hard work and enjoy a lunch on us at this year’s A Taste for Reading luncheon! May 2nd is just around the corner and we’d love to see you at the Four Seasons Seattle celebrating our multilingual learners. You can find information about the event here.

Even if you can’t attend, you can still make an impact and give kids the chance to read! Click here to make a donation to build home libraries!

Book Drive Spotlight

Meet local teenage author Harrison R. Thomas. Harrison published his first book, Thunder Chipmunk, when he was just 10 years old! From his website, his favorite things to do are think of new story ideas to write and publish. His hobbies include: drawing, practicing taekwondo and eating cookies.

Harrison recently hosted an amazing book drive for Page Ahead as part of the release of his latest book, The Poomsae Champion! We are so grateful for his support and that of his community. Thank you for creating and for thinking of others, Harrison! The kids are going to love their new books.

Celebrating National Reading Month

March is National Reading Month so Page Ahead volunteers celebrated with kindergartners and second-graders at schools in Seattle and Everett. After picking and choosing a book to take home and keep, along with a highly-coveted volunteer decorated bookmark, the students had those very same books read aloud to them by our wonderful volunteers!

Thank you to the 25 volunteers from Stryker, Coho RE, Fulcrum RE, and Boeing for helping us spread the joy of reading during National Reading Month and for taking the time out of your busy days to spend it with these young readers. You provided a lot of joy and book excitement for students and were great reading role models.

Happy Anniversary, Book Oasis!

Book Oasis was created to help increase book circulation in neighborhoods that are considered book deserts. These little free libraries are filled with children’s books and help bolster home libraries in the neighborhoods where they are located. Check out our website to see where you can find our Book Oases!

Since its beginning in 2021, there are now 19 locations. Together, Book Oases have circulated 21,330 books, and have been restocked 512 times by our volunteers. This is equivalent to 1,500 volunteer hours! What a huge undertaking and we are so grateful for the impact that Book Oasis has and the dedication of our volunteers. Thank you to all of the volunteers who have given their time and energy into making Book Oasis such a massive success!

Staff are reading…

Susan, Page Ahead’s Executive Director, is currently reading Yellowface by R. F. Kuang. Here’s what she has to say about the book:

The discussion of who has the right to tell which stories has been heating up for a while, and in Yellowface, that debate gets put on steroids. Add in other topical concerns (social media and internet rage, the publishing industrial complex…) and a sort of writing style that makes you feel you are in the middle of a catty online dramedy, and you have a book that has you cringing one minute and (darkly) laughing the next. My author friends, I would LOVE to hear your take on this one! Recommended!

Community Spotlight: Trilogy for Kids

Page Ahead gives its most heartfelt thank you to our supporters from Trilogy for Kids. They have been consistent in their support of literacy and supporting Page Ahead’s programs for over ten years. With their support alone, Page Ahead will be able to help three entire schools this year! Thank you, Trilogy for Kids for all you do for Page Ahead and the community.
