Power Forward Readers initiative aims to prevent summer learning loss
This summer, Seattleās own WNBA team, the Seattle Storm, is launching a new literacy initiative: Power Forward Readers. Aided by PEMCO Insurance, the goal is to reach more than 8,000 students this summer through library partnerships and community events, with additional programming planned throughout the school year to help prevent summer learning loss.
Page Ahead is a proud partner! Through fan book drives and donations from the Storm and PEMCO, we’re helping build home libraries for kids who might not otherwise have books of their own to choose from and keep.
“When kids see Storm players talking about the books they love, reading starts to feel exciting instead of like a school assignment,” said Susan Dibble, Page Ahead’s executive director. “We’re glad to be part of a partnership that makes reading feel like something worth celebrating.”
The Storm will be hosting their inaugural book drive for Page Ahead at the game on August 14 against the Portland Fire, and we’d love to see you there! Volunteers will be collecting donations outside the arena, and inside, we’ll have a “Sponsor-a-Book” table where you can browse a variety of titles and choose one to sponsor, contributing directly to a child’s home library in our community.
Whether you stop by before tip-off or pick up a book during the game, you’ll be helping put a book directly into a Seattle kid’s hands.
We’re grateful to the Storm and PEMCO for putting books into kids’ hands this summer, and for using their platform to show young readers, especially those who see themselves reflected in Storm players, that reading is worth celebrating.
Can’t make it to the game? Donate to the book drive now, or text READ to 707070.
