All Booked Up for Summer (Reading)!

22,000 students have gone home with 12 brand new books for their home library after participating in Book Up Summer! We could not have done this without the support from all of our volunteers. Over 160 volunteers spent their time (560 hours!) helping at every single step of the process, from doing inventory to helping the kids put their nameplate stickers inside each of their books. We are so incredibly grateful for everyone who spent their time with us and the students. Book Up Summer was possible thanks to every one of you! Kids across Washington can now spend the summer reading to their heart’s content.

This year, Book Up Summer was in 122 different schools, where students selected 283,000 books that they took home to build their home libraries.

Book Up Summer helps prevent the summer slide. The summer slide refers to students who lose some of the skills they learned and worked on over their summer vacation. When students go home with 12 brand new books, that they have self-selected, they will be able to practice and work on reading in a way that is exciting and enjoyable to them.

Thank You First Tech Federal Credit Union!

Thank you so much to our partners at First Tech Federal Credit Union for supporting Page Ahead with another grant this year! Their support is instrumental in operating our programs, such as Book Up Summer, and getting books to all kids who need them!

We are so grateful for the continued partnership and support of First Tech and all that they do to create greater access to early childhood literacy for all.

Summer Story Times – Ballard Locks

Happy Summer Vacation! If you have a young reader in your life, we encourage you to join us at the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Gardens at the Ballard Locks for a summer story time session!

Story Times will take place from June 27th – August 29th every Thursday from 11am – 12pm. We hope to see you there!

Bryant Elementary Book Drive

This month, the 5th graders at Bryant Elementary in north Seattle hosted a book drive for us! The theme of their book drive was “We Care, We Share” and they encouraged other students and their community to donate to Page Ahead. And what a job they did! Check out this creative video they recorded to educate their school community. Thanks to these amazing efforts, they were able to collect and donate nearly 400 books and $440!

We are so excited to see the next generation of readers advocate for their peers through caring and sharing! Thank you Bryant Hawks for helping your peers get brand new books.

What we’re reading…

Here’s what Diane Koontz, Page Ahead’s longest serving volunteer has to say about Life Safari by John Strelecky, a book she just recently finished after taking a month long safari trip to the African continent:

“This short book was a wonderful read. I have been entranced with the sights, the people and the landscapes of Africa since I got to go on safari there. Life Safari is about Jack, a young man struggling to find his place in life, who goes on a journey to Africa. As he meets people along the way and experiences the beauty of the land and the wildlife he finds both physical and mental changes transforming his view of himself and the world. He travels by foot with a wise African woman named Ma Ma Gombe who is on a journey of her own. She is seeking a fabled destination she was told of as a child—’a place where you can see the earth be born, and then watch the world go to sleep, a place so beautiful that words cannot describe it.’

I found this story to be very satisfying…a reminder that yes, you can find more quiet and joy and potential even in our current hustle-bustle world.”

It’s time for Book Up Summer!

The Page Ahead book fairs have begun! Through the end of June, more than 22,000 children across Washington will select their twelve brand-new books to keep and read over the summer. The Book Up Summer program gives these young students the tools and incentive they need to read during summer vacation. If you’d like to help kids select books at a book fair, sign up for shifts here (registration required if new user) or email Laura to sign up your group or company!

This year, schools received additional shipments of books highly requested by both students and their families!  To better support multilingual learners, for the first time schools received extra books in multiple world languages, including Vietnamese, Russian, Pashto, and Somali. In addition, copies of Dogman: Grime and Punishment were distributed to all schools with participating 2nd graders. Thank you to our amazing community for providing the support we need to expand Book Up Summer and provide home libraries for even more young readers and their families!

Partner Spotlight: Thank you Amazon!

We want to extend our deepest thanks to our amazing partners at Amazon.  We’re overflowing with gratitude for their unwavering dedication to fostering a love for reading by putting books in the hands of kids who need them most.

After an incredibly successful inaugural year, Amazon is once again supporting every single school participating in Book Up Summer from Seattle Public Schools! Their support goes beyond financial contributions for books and bags; Amazon team members roll up their sleeves and dive into the magic of literacy as Book Buddies at schools. Together, they guide students in handpicking 12 captivating books to take home for summer reading and beyond. We are grateful for their continued support and dedication to championing literacy with us.

To Amazon, we say a resounding THANK YOU for making a difference in our city, and shaping the future of our kids—one page at a time!

A Taste for Reading was a success!

We are thrilled so many people were able to gather with us on Thursday, May 2 for our annual luncheon, where we celebrated multilingual learners!

The program was full of amazing testimonials and success stories, from hearing Graciela’s story about growing up as the daughter of asparagus cutters and how she shows up for her students every day to seeing Laura, a Page Ahead kid, on the stage speaking about the impact of having your own books. We were all reminded of how the work that is done here helps all kids. Thank you to our speakers for showing us and reminding us to give back to the communities we belong to!

It also goes without saying, but, the kids from Panther Lake Elementary in Federal Way did a PHENOMENAL job with their performance of Federico and the Wolf by Rebecca Gomez. They really brought the joy of reading to stage!

Together we raised more than $219,000 to give more kids books. Thank you to all of you who gave to support home libraries for students across Washington state!

Weren’t able to attend? Click here to view the full event on our YouTube channel and you can still give a child a home library of 12 new books right here!

Thank you so much Left Coast Crime, we are so deeply appreciative of your hard work to put the conference together and for all the support you generated for kids and reading!

Staff are reading…

Our community outreach specialist, Laura, is currently reading Come and Get It by Kiley Reid. Here’s what she has to say about the book:

Come and Get It is a book where it feels like nothing and everything are happening simultaneously. This book is a real page-turner; Reid deals with issues of classism, racism, and friendship feuds in a masterful way where I felt instantly transported back to the college dorms. Highly recommend!

Book Drive Spotlight

Meet local teenage author Harrison R. Thomas. Harrison published his first book, Thunder Chipmunk, when he was just 10 years old! From his website, his favorite things to do are think of new story ideas to write and publish. His hobbies include: drawing, practicing taekwondo and eating cookies.

Harrison recently hosted an amazing book drive for Page Ahead as part of the release of his latest book, The Poomsae Champion! We are so grateful for his support and that of his community. Thank you for creating and for thinking of others, Harrison! The kids are going to love their new books.

Celebrating National Reading Month

March is National Reading Month so Page Ahead volunteers celebrated with kindergartners and second-graders at schools in Seattle and Everett. After picking and choosing a book to take home and keep, along with a highly-coveted volunteer decorated bookmark, the students had those very same books read aloud to them by our wonderful volunteers!

Thank you to the 25 volunteers from Stryker, Coho RE, Fulcrum RE, and Boeing for helping us spread the joy of reading during National Reading Month and for taking the time out of your busy days to spend it with these young readers. You provided a lot of joy and book excitement for students and were great reading role models.

Want to join us at our next reading event? Let us know where to send your invitation.

Happy Anniversary, Book Oasis!

Book Oasis was created to help increase book circulation in neighborhoods that are considered book deserts. These little free libraries are filled with children’s books and help bolster home libraries in the neighborhoods where they are located. Check out our website to see where you can find our Book Oases!

Since its beginning in 2021, there are now 19 locations. Together, Book Oases have circulated 21,330 books, and have been restocked 512 times by our volunteers. This is equivalent to 1,500 volunteer hours! What a huge undertaking and we are so grateful for the impact that Book Oasis has and the dedication of our volunteers. Thank you to all of the volunteers who have given their time and energy into making Book Oasis such a massive success!

Staff are reading…

Susan, Page Ahead’s Executive Director, is currently reading Yellowface by R. F. Kuang. Here’s what she has to say about the book:

The discussion of who has the right to tell which stories has been heating up for a while, and in Yellowface, that debate gets put on steroids. Add in other topical concerns (social media and internet rage, the publishing industrial complex…) and a sort of writing style that makes you feel you are in the middle of a catty online dramedy, and you have a book that has you cringing one minute and (darkly) laughing the next. My author friends, I would LOVE to hear your take on this one! Recommended!

Community Spotlight: Trilogy for Kids

Page Ahead gives its most heartfelt thank you to our supporters from Trilogy for Kids. They have been consistent in their support of literacy and supporting Page Ahead’s programs for over ten years. With their support alone, Page Ahead will be able to help three entire schools this year! Thank you, Trilogy for Kids for all you do for Page Ahead and the community.

Thank you to The Sunstone Project and The Penny Project Foundation!

We are so excited to announce that, with the generous grant from The Sunstone Project and their parent foundation, Penny Project Foundation, we will be able to purchase 300 books in various world languages and over 1,700 books featuring diverse characters to represent all of our students. These books will help support all of our programs, but specifically our Story Leaders program by providing more families the opportunity to participate in their home languages. It will also give kids more diverse and representative options to choose from when making their Book Up Summer selections.

Celebrating Black History Month with books

February was Black History Month, and in honor of it, we encourage you and your young readers to read books that celebrate Black joy and achievement! There are so many great stories to choose from, for all ages, that amplify and highlight the Black experience. This year’s Caldecott Award-winning book Big, by Vashti Harrison is a great example. It’s a beautifully illustrated story that follows a young Black girl on her journey of self-acceptance as she struggles with comments on her body size.

The Black Caucus of the American Library Association has released a booklist highlighting the best books of 2023 for readers K-8.

For ideas of stories to share with young readers in your life, browse this list of books that have been popular at our book fairs and in our programs featuring Black characters, both real and imagined.

Books are a powerful medium of representation and we hope that you and your loved ones can celebrate Black History Month through reading together.

Left Coast Crime 2024 – Volunteers Wanted

Our Literacy Programs Manager, Lisa, is currently reading Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff. An action-packed sci-fi book for the YA audience, this book is a great read! Set in the year 2575, two teenagers are thrust into survival mode when their planet is attacked. If you enjoy space adventures with plagues and rogue AI, this a book to add to your list.

Get to know the newest member of Page Ahead!

Hi, I’m Laura! I spent the last two and a half years in the mental health sector, working with those with eating disorders primarily. I’ve always had a strong passion to work in fields that mean something to me personally—where I can connect with the population served on a deeper level. I grew up in West Seattle and have been SO fortunate to receive educational support from local organizations throughout my childhood, specifically with Rainier Scholars and even Page Ahead! Because of this support, I’ve always been driven to help kids reach milestones in reading and all of their educational goals. In elementary school, I participated in Page Ahead’s Books for Kids program! I’ve always loved reading from an early age and through Books for Kids, I actually got to own a copy of my favorite book, “A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. Reading has always been one of my favorite hobbies, and my mom jokes that the hardest part of raising me was the sheer number of hours we spent in the library each week. I’m overjoyed with the ability to help foster the same joy in reading, that I’ve had my whole life, for the next generation of readers.

I’ve joined Page Ahead as the Community Outreach Specialist and much of my work will be helping volunteers and supporters, so you might start seeing emails from me (if you haven’t already)! Next time you’re at Page Ahead, please pop into my office to say hello!

I’m so excited to work with everyone going forward!!
